2004 Jeep Liberty Heater Core Replacement
It’s important to note that the information I’m presenting is based on my own experience with a 2002 KJ (US model).
First, I dismantled the dashboard and other items that were obstructing my path under the hood. The second step involves disassembling and reassembling the heater core. This was completed in three to five-hour work sessions. Having a helper would have been helpful, but I was able to complete it all without it.
Work on or around airbags with prudence and at your own risk; if you aren’t confident that they will be properly disabled, don’t try.
You may also want to discharge your air conditioning system in the proper way if you’re doing this. It is unlawful to discharge the Freon into the atmosphere unless you take it to a mechanic or hire the necessary tools.
First, I disconnected the battery; next, I removed the center console; and finally, I had to remove everything that was screwed or clipped into the dash. Every bit of trim on and around your steering wheel, column switch, instrument cluster, and both kick panels are removable.
Afterward, the audio and all of the HVAC controls. After then, the airbag on the passenger side was deployed. Before you can get to the swing bolts behind the kick panels, you need to get to the center mounting bolts as well as the plate that holds them in place. It was at this point that I loosened the fuse/junction box’s screws and then detached the wire harness, starting at the brake switch and working my way over.
After that, I detached the vacuum line and electrical connectors on the passenger side that connect to the blower motor, resistor, and other components, and retrieved them. After that, the firewall’s primary bolts are inserted. In the end, I was able to keep the steering wheel in place… Only the two 13mm bolts were loosened? In order to pull the dash in your direction, you have to back off the bolts that go through the mid-column until the ends are flush.
The heater box has two 10mm washer bolts on the bottom. And that’s all there is to it in the cabin.
We’re now in the engine compartment! Remove the coolant overflow to access the last washer bolt on the firewall and the input/output hoses. The heating core is located here… Afterward, disconnect the evaporator from the air conditioner.
The old heater box can be wiggled out of the cabin by lowering the dash back far enough. Pull it out by twisting it back towards you so that the heater core openings face up.
At this point, squeal with glee and look at your car in bewilderment, but be confident because this isn’t rocket science.
When reinstalling, be gentle and avoid forcing anything in. You don’t have to force anything in; you may create enough room for it to fit. Handle your fuse/junction box with care as well.
My gauge cluster was dead when I reinstalled everything. Connectors have to be reset and re-seated.
All should be well from there. “Relish the warmth!”
Tools Needed:
- Screwdriver – flat and phillips – electric screw driver will help…
- T-20 screwdriver for the steering column clamshell
- 3/8 drive ratchet, extensions, 10mm deep socket, 10mm regular socket, 13mm deep socket, 15mm deep and regular socket, 15mm ratcheting or regular end wrench
- Trim removal tool or similar prying tool (i like a putty knife) for dash panels
- Pliers for hose clamps
